Florida is weird. I mean that in the most loving way possible. What I mean is that Florida is so different from other parts of the country. It gets into the low 70’s and we bust out our favorite boots. When it gets into the 60’s, we grab that stylish scarf we’ve been waiting to wear for 11 months. We all know it’ll get hotter as the day goes on and the time with our “winter” clothes are limited so we have to take what we can get.
We have really cold temperatures a handful of days of the year and by the time those are coming to an end, we are talking about the absolute need for beach weather again.
It’s kind of the best, being in Florida.
But, one thing that is the same no matter where you are is flu season. Unfortunately, we are right in the middle of it, even if our noon lunch dates are in 80 degree weather.
I don’t keep Max from exploring and seeing other kids. I won’t avoid the places we love because I’m scared of catching a cold or the flu (though, admittedly, I am a little scared). I carry my hand sanitizer and wash hands often. I do as much as I can to prevent my child getting sick. And since I’m pregnant, I do as much as I can to prevent getting sick myself!
As parents we all know that we can’t protect our child from everything (isn’t a sick child heartbreaking), but I also make this smoothie full of antioxidants and ingredients that are immune-boosting and flu-fighting. Max loves it, I love it, my husband loves it.
Even when Max is being a picky toddler, he will always drink some smoothie. He loves the different combinations we come up with, and I think that he thinks he’s pretty cool walking around the house with his smoothie cup.
This smoothie is made with acai juice, almond milk, banana, mixed berries, kale, turmeric, honey and flaxseed. Acai has been named a superfood, bananas are full of wonderful potassium, turmeric is a member of the ginger family with powerful health properties, and flaxseed is high in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans which have antioxidant qualities. Of course, we all know that big leafy greens like kale provide us with so many nutrients and vitamins.
