If you saw my last post here on the Florida Prepaid Scholarship Program, then you know sending my kids to college is something I am very passionate about. As a proud alumni of the University of South Florida I do believe college instills great fundamentals in our children to go on and succeed in their future. It’s honestly a little scary to think about college and how quickly it may be here. Saving for college is something that every parent should consider and it’s great to live in Florida where they offer such great options like the Florida Prepaid College Plan.
Student loan debt is a topic that has been in the news quite frequently lately, a few of the alarming statistics are:
Some people carry their student loan debt until retirement
In 2016 Americans owed $1.4 trillion in student loan debt
College debt tends to weigh more heavily on women
These facts are enough to scare any parent into action; especially parents with little ones. The idea of our daughter delaying her wedding years due to her student loan debt or our son carrying his debt until he retires are both things that I can do something about now.
Thankfully, as Florida residents, we have access to the Florida Prepaid Scholarship Program. They have many different options available, including the ability to select specific costs, payment plans and benefits. The plan can also be used at schools nationwide. Open enrollment ends February 28, 2017, so there is still time to enroll and ensure that your child never has to endure the heavy burden of hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt.
